Robotic or gantry systems are more popular large-scale 3D printing solutions based on individual needs and industry applications. This article highlights the differences between robot-based and gantry-based solutions for large-scale 3D printing.
Keywords: KINGS FGF, FGF 2420, FGF1800, Kings 3D
Printing Size
The choice between gantry and robot-based large-scale 3D printing solutions is based on the size of the object to be printed. A single robot setup is limited by the robot's reach. Therefore, projects with a workspace of more than 2 meters require a two-robot setup, which results in a maximum width of up to 4 meters. The printing sizes of KINGS FGF machines range from 0.8m to 3.5m.

Flexibility
The print head of a gantry 3D printer is moved by slides fixed on three axes. The structure is usually more stable and can more accurately control the position of the print head. This design provides higher mechanical rigidity and reduces vibration and errors, thereby improving the accuracy and consistency of printing. It usually performs better when printing complex structures.
Robotic arm 3D printers have more degrees of freedom, usually six axes or more, and can print at a wider range of angles and directions.
However, the structure of a robotic arm 3D printer is more complex and less stable than a gantry, and the accumulated errors of the various joints and axes of the robotic arm will affect the printing quality and the fineness of the details.
Operation
The operation interface is usually simple, intuitive, and user-friendly, suitable for general users; the debugging process is also relatively simple, reducing the complexity and time of operation. The operation and programming are complex and require professional operating skills; the debugging and calibration process is complex and easily affected by various factors, which increases the difficulty of operation. The requirements and proficiency of engineers are extremely high.
